TSC710 DAC SIM troubleshooting

Modified on Fri, 2 Oct at 11:06 AM

Before assuming the hardware has given up on you, there are a few things worth checking:

1. TSC710 Android OS

Ensure your TSC710 Android OS is as up to date as possible. Go to Go to Android Settings (Gear Icon) / System / System Update / Check for update. Best to do over Wi-Fi but, if an emergency, doing over cellular should work too.

2. TSC710 Shelf mode

Before proceeding with steps 3-5 below put the device in "Shelf Mode" which should remove all power to the modem and reset it.  *To complete this step you will need your Trimble charging brick and cable for the TSC710 and be able to plug into outlet.*

Press and hold the green Power button until presented with the options to Power Down, Reset, or Shelf Mode.

Select Shelf mode. After TSC710 powers down completely, you will need to connect brick and cable and plug into outlet to power on again.

3. Confirm the APN.

The wrong APN can allow a device to show signal without actually passing data.

Go to Android Settings (Gear Icon) / Network & Internet / SIMs / choose SIM (should say DAC Wireless)

Ensure Use SIM, Mobile data, and Roaming fields are all Enabled.

Scroll down to Access Point Names. Ensure the APN is set correctly (Most often with the TSC710 and DAC, the APN will be wbdata case sensitive)

If the correct APN isn't in list, click on the + symbol, enter DAC for the Name field and wbdata for the APN field

Make sure to click 3 dots at top right and click Save

When you return to APN screen, ensure the APN you created is the one selected.

You may need to power cycle your device to get Cellular to function as normal

4. Check SIM & Reseat it

Yes, we're giving you the IoT version of "turn it off and back on again."

Removing and reinserting the SIM takes seconds and rules out half the usual suspects in one move. It’s worth doing before you invest time in anything more involved. Pull it, check both the card and the tray for debris, and clean the contact points with compressed air or a lint-free cloth. Also giving the SIM a quick buff on your pants or shirt can help.

5. Try a SIM swap

Move the SIM into a device you know works. You'll quickly learn whether you're dealing with a connectivity issue or a device issue.
